09.19.2007 // Dynasty Japan and Dynasty USA Promote "Marching in Okayama" 20th Anniversary!
Thank you very much for your gracious support and sponsorship for years. In the period of October 6-8, 2007 we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this marching pageantry event. The citizens of Okayama and Japanese marching fans are looking for seeing most of Japanese excellent marching groups as well as the Blue Devils, who is also celebrating 50th anniversary and the honorable 12-time world champion of DCI. Not only the Yokohama Scouts Junior Drum & Bugle Corps (2007 DCI International Div. Champion / 2006 DCJ Champion) and going to compete, but also Okayama will have the special guest groups like 2007 WGI Bronze Medalist, Aimachi Color Guard.
The Championship will have the DCI official judges from US in addition to the Japanese official DCJ judges. This is also another great feature for many drums corps to receive the best educational motivation. The judges also working on other marching bands to advise without scores. This has become the great feature of Japanese marching contest organizations as well as the Marching-In-Okinawa, who also celebrate the 20th Anniversary next year based on the long friendship with Okayama. Proudly these two organizations have enjoyed the nest of marching talent in Japan for two decades.
44 bands and drums corps are attending from all over Japan, northern Hokkaido and southern Okinawa. More than 2,000 performers and musicians are excited to exchange friendship by appreciating each other. Groups include the kindergarten bands and university bands. Okayama have excellent artists of all generations as of big marching family. Dynasty Japan and USA have supported this project for 20 years by featuring the world famous color guard group, San Jose Raiders, Walt Disney Epcot Future Corps, Magic Drum & Bugle Corps, Primary Colors (Dynasty Sponsored Group), and the Blue Deilvs as frequest visitor to Japan.
This project has brighten up the educational scenes of Japanese marching band and drum corps contest activity by introducing the DCI adjudication system. In this aspect this year, FJM and Drillmaster agreed to join the educational sponsorship by sending judges to Japan. Today most marching organizations are working hard to improve the Japanese judge system since then. Furthermore Okayama has given the exciting judging job to the local mama and papas to comment on the children groups at the festival division. These judges have done excellent jobs proving their affection is not necessarily unfair.
The Marching-In-Okayama has been the sole academic and educational marching pageantry in Japan for almost two decades covered by TV media. Not only excellent groups but also families and even judges are interviewed by them during the period. Already Okayama look for many guests as introduced in the news paper.
People from all over Japan and from the US, the Mecca of world marching activity are to enjoy their trip to Okayama, strolling in the beautiful classical gardens, historical architecture , Okayama Ujo Castle, and the elegant cultural life style of Okayama.
Once again we, Dynasty Japan, appreciating your gracious support and patronage

Win Completes Third Consecutive Undefeated Championship Season
Membership Day 2008 Announced

Rochester, NY (September 2, 2007) – The Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps captured its seventh Drum Corps Associates (“DCA”) world championship Sunday night at the 43d Annual DCA World Championships at Paetec Park, Rochester NY. The win is also the Buccaneers’ third consecutive DCA championship and completes the corps’ third consecutive undefeated season. With wins in Saturday’s preliminary round and Sunday’s finals round of competition, the Buccaneers’ consecutive win streak now stands at 29 contests over three years.

The Buccaneers placed first with a score of 98.313, out of a possible 100. The Caballeros, from Hawthorne, NJ, were second with a score of 96.650, and the host Empire Statesmen of Rochester, NY were third with 95.650 points. The Buccaneers took top honors in percussion, visual, music effect, visual effect and tied the Empire Statesmen for first in brass. The corps also received a perfect score in ensemble percussion.

The win comes as the corps celebrates the culmination of its 50th anniversary season. For Corps Director James C. Gruber, the win was a perfect end to a special year. “All year long we’ve been reminded about the great history of this organization and the thousands of men and women who’ve been part of it over the years. Our administrative and teaching staffs, and especially our members, worked very hard to put together a season worthy of our legacy. We’ve done that. Our members delivered a spectacular performance on Sunday night. I couldn’t be prouder of everyone involved.”

Members of the corps were aware all season long that they were part of a unique moment in the long history of the storied organization. For mellophone player and Reading area native Krissy McMullen, 43, the corps’ anniversary was a motivating factor in her decision to return to the corps after last competing in 1983 through 1986. “The Buccaneers hold a special place in my heart,” McMullen said. “I met my husband Mike here and we have two great kids. In 2004, after living in Western New York for many years, we returned to live in the area. I saw the corps in 2005 and just knew I had the itch to perform again. After all these years, it was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it was also one of the most incredible experiences of my life. The tears started flowing the minute my horn came down at the end of the show. It’s an honor to be a part of this great corps in its 50th anniversary.”

Eric Bentz, 22, a 2003 graduate of Conrad Weiser High School, described the experience as “magical.” “Everything clicked for our performance on Sunday,” he said. “I got chills as the scores were announced and I realized we had won. But regardless of the score, it was a great experience to be a part of this drum corps and to participate in its anniversary. At our home show last week, it was just amazing to stand on the field with 50 years of alumni and sing our corps song. I knew I was part of something much larger than myself. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

The Buccaneers will officially close the books on the 2007 anniversary season with the corps’ annual banquet on Saturday, November 24, at the Sheraton Reading hotel. The Bucs will kick off the 2008 season with Membership Day 2008, to be held on Sunday, November 25 at Twin Valley High School, Elverson, PA. Anyone interested in membership in the Buccaneers for 2008 is welcome to attend and learn more. To receive additional information, visit www.readingbuccaneers.org and click on “Membership Area.”

Founded in 1957, the Buccaneers are a non-profit, education-oriented musical organization. The Buccaneers are a charter member of Drum Corps Associates and won the first-ever DCA world championships in 1965. Additional titles followed in 1968, 1979, 1980 and, most recently, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, the last three all undefeated championship seasons.

The Buccaneers are sponsored in part by Behler-Hein American Legion Post 637, Hamburg, Pennsylvania, and Roy A. Master American Legion Post 217, Topton, Pennsylvania

06.11.2007 // Frenship High School sponsors Bill Bachman Drum Clinic!
The Frenship High School Band sponsored a free clinic by professional drummer Bill Bachman last Thursday and hopes to bring more expert musicians to the area.

“Hopefully this will be the first of many such things,” said David Speer, an assistant band director and percussion coordinator for the high school band.

Speer said the new school bond, which was passed in early May, will help bring professional musicians to Frenship. Some of the bond funds are earmarked for a new band hall and theater.

“We’ll have better facilities to do it ... Especially when we get the new theater built, it will be a perfect venue,” he said.

Bachman brings years of knowledge and experience to share with the students. He studied at the University of North Texas and graduated from the Berklee College of Music.

Bachman said he travels the world doing clinics sponsored by drum companies.

The Frenship drum line also had the opportunity to work with Bachman before the clinic on Thursday and Friday.

“He’s really teaching some important fundamental things. These kids are already very talented at a lot of things, but there’s some sound, fundamental things that we needed to work on and that’s Bill’s specialty,” said Speer.

Speers said band members will also go to Jones AT&T Stadium on August 1 to see the Drum Corps International performance. He sees the performance as an opportunity for the students to see more professional-level musicians.

“There aren’t a lot of opportunities for kids in this area to see people of this caliber play,” he said.

06.11.2007 // Michael Huestis Clinic-June 6th, 2007, Highland High School, Pocatello, ID
Dynasty clinician Michael Huestis presented a Marching Percussion Clinic June 6th at Highland High School in Pocatello, Idaho with approximately 40 students and teachers in attendance.
He started with dispelling some common myths about drumlines. He also included the different types of strokes along with applications for the mallet keyboard percussionists to work with the drumline. He also explained his application of the KISS principal(Keep It Simple Silly).
Michael stressed how important the pit application is to not only a competitive drumline. but also to add great colors to the marching band as a whole. He explained that many times an ok drumline with a great pit can be competitive and students that are willing to play in the pit percussion section are “rock stars” in his book. He gave some tips for the pit as far as performance aspects and how to achieve the best results.
He gave a section of the clinic devoted to his 4 steps:
1. Play the correct part
2. Play in time
3. Play the correct volume
4. Play the correct interpretation
and explained each application so the students & teachers would know how to maximize the performance for the section and the entire band.
The last section of the clinic was devoted to ways of correcting timing problems on the football field. Michael also played a marching snare solo to finish things up, followed by time for the various drumlines to get to know each other.
One of the best aspects of Michael Huestis as a clinician is his emphasis on the various drumlines being friends, not in each other’s faces. He continually stressed that drumlines compete with the time and the calendar, not each other and when the show is over, everyone is friends involved with a great musical activity.

The first Annual Southern Utah “Day of Percussion” was held at Southern Utah University in Cedar City on Saturday March 24, 2007. The event brought together high school and junior high percussionists for performances, workshops, and clinics.

Percussion ensembles from several Utah high schools (Canyon View, Cedar, Hurricane, Enterprise, and Riverton) performed and were coached by Patrick Roulet and Dutch Workman.

The “Day of Percussion” also featured clinics given by the several top percussion professionals and educators in the country.

? Mike Huestis, Utah PAS chapter president and percussion instructor for American Fork High School gave a Marching Percussion clinic and inspired everyone with his incredible snare chops. His clinic was sponsored by Vic Firth, Dynasty and Evans Drum Heads

? Timpanist, Salvatore Rabbio, gave a timpani clinic, performed several solos, and shared stories from his 40 years as the timpanist for the Detroit Symphony. His clinic was sponsored by Yamaha, Summerhays Music, and the Best Western El Rey in Cedar City.

? Rounding out the day was a clinic by Percussive Arts Society Health and Wellness Committee Chairman Dr. “Dutch” Workman on playing without injury. Dutch discussed the many common performance-related injuries suffered by percussionists and how to avoid them.

Reading, PA & Lake Geneva, WI (April 30, 2007) – The two-time defending Drum Corps Associates (“DCA”) world champion Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle Corps and Dynasty USA, a division of D.E.G. Musical Products, Inc. (“Dynasty”) today announced that the two organizations have entered into a promotional agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Dynasty USA will be the exclusive supplier of marching brass and battery, mallet and auxiliary percussion instruments for the Buccaneers, who in turn will become Dynasty USA’s first endorsed all-age drum and bugle corps.

“As a founding member corps of DCA, we’re excited that Dynasty USA is making such a significant investment in the all-age drum corps activity, and we’re honored that Dynasty USA has selected the Buccaneers to help lead its effort,” said Buccaneers Corps Director James C. Gruber. “In 2005 the Buccaneers made a substantial investment in a new set of Dynasty USA horns, and we’ve been using Dynasty USA percussion instruments for several years. The quality of the instruments our members have used is one of the reasons the corps has enjoyed the competitive success it’s had recently. We’re looking forward to working with Dynasty USA to ensure that our members continue to use the finest equipment and to promote the all-age drum corps activity. This is a great anniversary present for this drum corps.”

The Buccaneers celebrate the corps’ fiftieth anniversary in 2007 with an ambitious program entitled Blue Era. The show features New Era Dance by contemporary American composer Aaron Jay Kernis, The Promise of Living, from The Tender Land, by Aaron Copland, Danza Final (Malambo), from the Estancia dances by Alberto Ginastera and Rhapsody in Blue, by George Gershwin.

“Dynasty USA is pleased to announce our partnership with the Buccaneers,” said R. Allan Murray, Vice President of Dynasty USA. “Everyone in the Dynasty USA family welcomes the Buccaneers and we look forward to working with everyone involved with the corps for a long time. The Buccaneers have a long-standing tradition of quality, competitiveness and showmanship that has been alive for 50 years and Dynasty USA would like to extend our congratulations to the Bucs for such a wonderful accomplishment.”

Founded in 1957, the Buccaneers are a non-profit, education-oriented musical organization. The Buccaneers are a charter member of Drum Corps Associates and won the first-ever DCA world championships in 1965. Additional titles followed in 1968, 1979, 1980 and, most recently, in 2005 and 2006, both undefeated championship seasons. The corps celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2007. All Buccaneers alumni are encouraged to visit the corps’ web site to register to receive anniversary information. 04.02.2007 // MOC-Floyd Valley Senior High School at Iowa Day of Percussion!

The Pride of the Dutchmen Drumline

The drumline at MOC-Floyd Valley is organized as a portion of the high school marching band (The Pride of the Dutchmen Marching Band). There are currently 26 percussion students enrolled in the band program of which 18 are marching in the drumline and 7 perform in the front ensemble and 1 is a member of the visual ensemble.
Auditions for drumline are held at the end of May each year with formal rehearsals beginning around August 1. Students may audition for any or every instrument that they want to play. Students are placed according to ability and ensemble considerations.
Performances – In addition to performing as a portion of the marching band, the drumline performs at various functions and events through the schools and the communities including a series of 5 performances in front of thousands of spectators at the Orange City Tulip Festival in May.
Instruction – There are NO specialized percussion instructors or drumline instructors in the MOC-Floyd Valley school system. This necessitates a great deal of self motivation on the part of individual members. The drumline is instructed through a combination of former students, current students, outside percussion specialists and the high school marching band director. Some of the percussion specialists that have recently worked with the drumline include:

John Willmarth – The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps
Mark Hunter – The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps, BLAST
Kit Chatham – BLAST
Nate Eby – BLAST
Josh Bowman – BLAST
Dr. Paul Garcia - North Carolina State University

Students from several Tennessee universities (including Tennessee Tech University, Austin Peay State University, Belmont University and the University of Tennessee – Chattanooga) attended the clinic.

Mark performed on his new Dynasty 5.0 Octave Marimba that sounded wonderful! I was overwhelmed by the resonance of the low end and the clarity of the upper register.

01.31.2007 // Jubal tops Drum Corps Europe Championships

After completing a very successful three weeks' tour through the USA, Jubal came back to Europe to win two championships and be crowned both National and European Champions. Jubal's feeder corps Jong Jubal took both Championships titles as well.
The heat was on in Rotterdam last Saturday, when a total of 14 Open Class corps, 4 Cadet Class corps and 4 Marching Percussion Class brought a total of five European countries together for the annual Drum Corps Europe Championships.
The spread in points after the morning's prelims (only 1.15 between the top 4 corps) in Open Class already announced that it would be a very spectacular Finals night. It turned out to be the most exciting finals ever.
That same evening, in front of an over-enthused crowd, Jubal managed to take the lead by a mere 0,05 points over England's Northern Star from Leeds and the reigning DCUK Champions Senators from Eatleigh, who placed third.
Jubal's 2006 program is entitled "The Chase" and treated the crowd to music from "The Incredibles", "Sentimental Journey"and "Twin Peaks".
