Ryan J Peni is one of New Zealand's most innovative and diverse tuba soloists. A native of New Zealand, Ryan is from the small town of Ngongotaha, near Rotorua and has established himself as one of the worlds leading tuba virtuosos. Ryan made his solo debut playing an arrangement of Arban's Carnival Of Venice when he was fourteen years old, only five months after he started playing his chosen instrument.?
Ryan has won countless regional and national titles including the New Zealand Junior Champion of Champions in 2003. Ryan has been principal tuba for the National Youth Brass Band of New Zealand for 2002, 2003 and 2004 and is one of the youngest principals in the history of the National Youth Brass Band. He has played and toured with some of New Zealand's symphony orchestras and was also principal tuba of New Zealand's National Youth Orchestra in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 Ryan was the youngest member selected for the New Zealand National Band.?
Ryan is also a founding member of ?The New Zealand Tuba Quartet?
In 2002 Ryan created an exciting and interactive schools tour called Ryan and Tuba Roy. Now called The Tubaguy Schools Tour, Ryan has travelled the country visiting many schools presenting this fantastic show and in 2003 it took him to Sydney, Australia where he visited some of Sydney's leading Private and Public schools. Also in 2002 Ryan won a music scholarship to attend New Zealand's leading private school Kings College in Auckland where he studied music under Nigel Weeks (conductor of Brighouse and Rastrick band), and was also invited to be Principal Tuba of Internationally renown band, Dalewool Auckland Brass.
In 2004 Ryan was featured on a New Zealand Television documentary as one of New Zealand's leading young classical musicians.?
Ryan studied tuba under principal tubaist of the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Jonathan Baker. Ryan has also received tuition from well known tubaists such as Floyd Cooley (ex. principal tuba of San Francisco Symphony Orchestra) and also James Gourlay (Tuba Soloist and Head of Brass at the Royal Northern College of Music).?
Some of Ryan's highlights include playing at the 2004 British Open Brass Band Championship and the 2004 Wonju Military Tattoo in Korea playing the tuba duet ?Flight of the Bumble bee? . Also in 2005 Ryan had the honour to perform with International Opera singer, Dame Melvina Major.?
Now living in Christchurch, 20 year old Ryan is a professional musician with the famous New Zealand Army Band and also conducts master classes and workshops around New Zealand and Australian schools. He is an active tuba soloist throughout New Zealand and abroad. ?
