Discover J. Mark Thompson



J. Mark Thompson is Professor of Music (Trombone and Low Brass) at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA. He holds degrees from Murray State University, the University of Southern California, and The University of Iowa, and his primary teachers include Ray Conklin, Dr. John Hill, George Krem, Charles Vernon, and Arnold Jacobs. In 2003, Dr. Thompson was recognized by Marquis Who’s Who in America. A charter life member of the International Trombone Association, Dr. Thompson has been very active in literature-related activities since 1989, including service as Chair of the Publications and Literature Committee. Editor and co-author of French Music for Low Brass Instruments (Indiana University Press), Dr. Thompson is also editor and co-author of the second edition of Solos for the Student Trombonist (The Brass Press/Editions Bim), published in 2004. His writings have also appeared in the International Trombone Association Journal. Recently, he contributed to the forthcoming publication of the Euphonium Source Book (Indiana University Press). He was a featured artist/clinician at the 1997 International Trombone Festival in Champaign, IL, and he performed at the 1995 International Brassfest in Bloomington, IN. He was a featured soloist with the South Arkansas Symphony in 2005, and he was a featured soloist with Shreveport Symphony Orchestra and The United States Army Orchestra in Washington, D.C., in 2006. He is also a co-founder of LATEX Trombones, a professional trombone quartet that recently celebrated its first CD release and has been featured at the 2002 International Trombone Festival and the 1999 New York Brass Conference. Formerly Principal Bass Trombone of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, he is currently Principal Bass Trombone & Tenor Tuba of the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, the Longview Symphony Orchestra, and the South Arkansas Symphony, and he performs Trombone/Bass Trombone/Tenor Tuba with the Lancaster Festival in Ohio.
