Discover Benjamin Pierce



Dr. Benjamin Pierce is on the faculty at the University of Arkansas, where he teaches applied tuba and euphonium and directs the tuba/euphonium ensemble. He holds a BM in euphonium performance from Bowling Green State University in Ohio, an MM in euphonium performance from the University of Michigan, and a DMA in tuba performance from the University of Michigan. His principal teachers have been Fritz Kaenzig, Velvet Brown, and Wesley Jacobs.
Pierce has performed with several major ensembles including the Detroit Symphony, the Detroit Chamber Brass, the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the Toledo Symphony, and the Flint Symphony. He has been a featured soloist annually with the Toledo Concert Band since 1999. He has served as principal tubist of the Ann Arbor Symphony and the Ann Arbor Brass Quintet and is currently principal tubist of the Northwest Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding member of the Boston Mountain Brassworks, the U of A’s faculty brass quintet.
Pierce has presented guest recitals and master classes at several American universities as well as Canada and Japan. He was a guest artist at the 2001 Hokkaido Euphonium and Tuba Association camp in Sapporo, Japan and at the 2000 ITEC (International Tuba-Euphonium Conference) in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Pierce has been the winner of numerous international competitions including both euphonium and tuba divisions of the ITEC Artist Competition and both tuba and euphonium divisions of the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Artist Competition. He was the grand prize winner of the 2001 Japan Wind and Percussion Competition in Tokyo and in 2000 was the first euphonium player ever to be chosen as a finalist in the prestigious Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City. Other achievements include the national grand prize in brass in the 1998 MTNA Collegiate Artist Competition, first prize in the 2000 Royal Northern College of Music International Open Euphonium Competition in Manchester, England, and the 2001 Lansing Matinee Musicale Orchestral Brass Competition.
Ben currently lives in Springdale, Arkansas with his wife, Clarisa, and their two dogs, Chester and Charlie.
